How to prevent Norovirus

Norovirus, commonly referred to as the Winter vomiting bug, is highly contagious and increasingly becoming a problem in the UK. Transmitted from person to person, or via contaminated food or water sources, it usually lasts for 24 hours, but can persist for up to 72.

There are some measures that the NHS recommends you take to protect yourself from contracting the virus, such as practising good hand hygiene – washing with plenty of soap and water – and disinfecting potentially contaminated areas using bleach based cleaners.

However, because Norovirus can be transmitted through the air and its incubation period is 24-72 hours before symptoms appear, it may be impossible to completely avoid being exposed.

That said, there is plenty that you can do to control an outbreak once you know it has occurred, and ensure that it doesn’t spread any further. These measures include:

Cleaning up soiled areas immediately

Disposing of cleaning cloths and gloves safely

Washing bedding

Continuing to sanitise contaminated surfaces

Disinfecting the air
